HNWIS is delivered by Scottish Enterprise and the project partners through our delivery contractors Arup, WRc and Mabbett. Our team provides access to a wide range of innovation, business and technical specialists who are on hand to discuss your innovative initiatives and routes to funding and other support services which may be available.

Arlene Goode
Industry Engagement & Market Intelligence (Arup) CEng C.WEM FCIWEM MICE
Arlene has a background in water and environmental management with a focus on technology, operations and asset management. Her experience also includes stakeholder engagement and identification of innovative technologies for the water sector; working closely with end users and with product developers.
Joanna Corrigan
Business Development (Arup) CEng and MICE
Joanna is a chartered Civil Engineer with 18 years’ experience working on water related projects. She has worked with water utility companies and specialises in flood risk and resilience. She identifies innovative Scottish companies and identify innovation support opportunities.
Alison Bradley
Business Development & Technology Support (Arup) MEng (Hons)
Alison is a Civil Engineer with 6 years’ experience working on water related projects. She has worked with local authorities, utility suppliers and regulators on flood prevention schemes and water quality assessments. She is keen to share this knowledge with water companies to support their development, helping them grow their business and address industry challenges.
Siraj Tahir
Technology Specialist (Arup) BSc MSc
Siraj leads the HNWIS team of engineers and consultants assisting the water innovation SMEs in Scotland, as well as Arup’s Venturi and Wet Networks initiatives fostering innovation in the global water sector.  He currently leads Arup’s work on Circular Water Economy with Ellen MacArthur Foundation. He has 22+ years of experience in the Water and Flood Risk Management.
Tom Doyle
Technology Support & Market Engagement (Arup) MEng
Tom is a water consultant in Arup and operations manager for the UK Water Partnership, a public-private not-for-profit organisation which convenes key players in the UK water sector to support research excellence, promote collaborative innovation and drive growth in the UK water economy. He is also an ambassador for various UK water innovation initiatives including Wet Networks, Digital Water and the UK Test Facilities Register.

Technical Support Specialists

Leo Carswell
Technical Lead / Principal Consultant (WRc)
Leo leads the Technology business area at WRc. He is responsible for the development, assessment and implementation of treatment and monitoring technology within the water, waste and environmental sectors. He has a PhD in instrumentation for water quality monitoring and brings 18 years' experience of working in the industry. Leo is a long-standing director and past Chairman of Water Interest Group (SWIG) and Chairman of the UK Instrument User Group (IUG).
Kevin Poole
Principal Consultant (WRc)
Kevin brings knowledge and understanding of water and wastewater plant operations, associated best practice and applied technology. He is a Principal Consultant with experience in enterprise, operational & strategic risk management and substantial multi-site operational management. His extensive operations and risk management experience has enabled him to undertake technical adjudication and expert witness work relating to the operation and maintenance of wastewater and sludge treatment assets.
Derek J. McNab
Managing Director and Principal Environmental Engineer (Mabbett) BEng (Hons), MSc, CEng, CSci, CEnv, FIChemE, MIEMA
A chartered engineer, scientist and environmentalist, Derek brings over 20 years’ experience in business improvement through resource efficiency, technology and regulatory compliance. Derek is a Fellow of the IChemE and Visiting Professor at the University of Strathclyde, where he lectures on Environmental Technology.
Michael Lynch
Engineering Director and Principal Environmental Engineer (Mabbett) CEng, FIChemE, MIEnvSc, MIAQM
A multi-credential, chartered chemical engineer and Fellow of the IChemE, Michael has led a high number of process/product treatability trials spanning multiple sectors. With 15 years experience as an Environmental Engineer, Michael has a broad knowledge base and is able to confidently and competently define and undertake environmental technology trials.
James Forbes
Process Engineering Manager and Senior Environmental Engineer (Mabbett) CEng, CEnv, CWEM, MCIWEM
James is a chartered engineer and environmentalist who has successfully led product treatability trials for water and wastewater technologies in a variety of sectors. James is a full Member of the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management and is accredited as a Chartered Water and Environmental Manager.
Richard Foster
Senior Engineer (WRc)
Richard is a civil engineer and the senior clean water network at WRc. He brings 30 years' experience of design and planning of water supply systems. He provides practical advice to water companies and industrial clients on emerging technology as well as developing software tools for network modellers and operation engineers.
