The Hydro Nation Water Innovation Service (HNWIS), established by the Scottish Government through Scottish Enterprise and Highlands and Islands Enterprise, identifies innovative Scottish companies, particularly SMEs, and supports them along the innovation path from concept to commercialisation.
The service contributes directly to the Hydro Nation's goal of delivering economic gain to Scotland through the creation of new companies and new jobs that drive innovation in the water sector.
AECOM with support from WRc and UK Water Ltd will manage the three-year programme, which is part of the government’s Hydro Nation strategy to support the economic development of Scotland’s water resources.
The Hydro Nation Strategy was launched in 2012, and is designed to deliver economic growth for Scotland through maximising the economic benefits of the country’s water resources by reducing energy use and improving efficiency. The scheme will help raise Scotland’s international profile as a leader in water management and increase global understanding of the circular economy.

Our extensive experience covers the services that are associated with all water or wastewater facilities a client has, or may have. For example, we have a strong knowledge of treatment process, pressure issues and measures to improve water efficiency. We ensure the services the client requires meet their needs and provides them with the most economically viable solution.
As an example of UK Water’s client assistance is our value added service which includes leakage detection and repair through to treatment and process consultancy. We will assess more efficient technologies where it is economic and practicable to do so. We also provide technical advice on areas to improve the efficiency of a client’s business operation. For example better treatment processes for trade effluent discharges and improvement to the water and wastewater infrastructure within a site boundary.
